A Day in the Life of a Talkspace Therapist: Samantha White

Samantha White Talkspace Therapist Author

In this series we look at a day in the lives of our therapists. Their stories illustrate the joys and challenges of dedicating one’s life to helping others improve their mental health and cope with mental illness.

7:30 a.m.

I awaken to a chorus of birds chirping, singing riotously, endlessly. The windows are closed and we don’t have any pet birds, but for the first minute or so I believe I am hearing the lovely music of birds in the treetops. Eventually I remember that it’s the ringtone of my iPhone, and I roll over and hit “Snooze.” This happens a few more times until I’m ready to put my feet on the floor, sit up on the bed, and admire the view through the wall-to-wall window of palm trees and sky.

8:30 a.m.

Returned from my morning walk, I park my specialized orthopedic walker in the dining alcove. I’ve been using it as a mobility aid for about six years now, since my arthritis, fibromyalgia, and COPD overtook me and I became disabled. Like the commercial says, I love my walker. I named it Dolly. Without it, I’d be unable to walk more than thirty yards. With it, I can go almost anywhere! Continue reading A Day in the Life of a Talkspace Therapist: Samantha White

I knew as a child that I wanted to be a therapist and help people with their mental health. I am grateful for having the ability to touch the lives of so many people through the process of therapy. I started working in the mental health field because, as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to help people. It’s not fun to battle mental health alone. I got into therapy as a second career and went back to school in my early 30s. To provide a deeper level of service, I needed more education and insight. Continue reading Meet Our Therapists: Matt Lawson

Why are you working in therapy/mental health?

I’ve always wanted to be in the helping field. Originally, I was in school to be a nurse practitioner. After having anxiety issues myself and dropping out of nursing school and college for a semester, I changed my major to psychology. From there I decided I wanted to help people overcome their own obstacles and make changes in their lives by working as a therapist. I went back to school at the University of North Alabama and got my master’s degree in Community Counseling. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Why are you working in therapy/mental health?

I became a therapist for several reasons, one being that I am a natural helper. It is who I am. I am drawn to helping people and people are drawn to me to help them. I am grateful I get to be a trusting, supportive and empathetic person in someone’s life, someone who may not have that or ever have had that.

I love connecting with people and I was born a very empathetic person. The field of psychology and the human mind fascinate me. It always made sense to me to be working in this field.

But I like to think no matter what job I were to work in I would still be impacting other people’s lives. We all have something to offer one another. That can be done whether you are a therapist, a custodian, a musician, a stay at home mom, entrepreneur, anything.

Everybody is making a difference in others’ lives and the world, even when they don’t realize it. I try to be mindful of that. Continue reading Meet Our Consultation Therapists: Jennifer K. Fuller

Why are you working in therapy/mental health?

I’ve always been interested in the psychology behind people’s actions. As far back as I remember, people turned to me with their problems. Being the oldest in my family, I had to take a helping role. My interests and strengths made going into counseling and psychology a natural step for me.

I also have learned a lot about myself. Being in this field has motivated me to constantly be working on myself. I know I can only coach others as far as I can get myself.

I’m extremely passionate about relationships and people feeling empowered to deal with challenges more confidently. People’s fear and anxiety can distract them from seeing the choices they have. I help people break down problems and relationships into choices that empower and connect them. Continue reading Meet Our Therapists: Marci Payne
