Does Optum cover mental health?

Most plans offered by Optum cover mental health care. If you have Optum insurance you should be covered for therapy and psychiatry with Talkspace, though it may depend upon the specifics of your plan.

Does Optum Health cover therapy?

Most Optum insurance plans cover the cost of therapy, however not every therapist will be in-network. Good news: Talkspace therapists are in-network with Optum. Optum plans cover ongoing mental health care with one of Talkspace’s licensed mental health clinicians.

Disclaimer: While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2014 mandates that health plans cover mental health services, make sure to check with your insurance provider or review your policy details to learn more about your Optum insurance therapy coverage.

What types of therapy are covered by Optum?

Optum covers access to therapy for a variety of mental health needs, from coping with everyday stress to serious mental health symptoms or conditions. Talkspace offers many traditional types of therapy that fall under Optum mental health coverage:

  • Psychotherapy: Also known as talk therapy, psychotherapy is the umbrella term used to describe many techniques designed to address thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that aren’t useful or productive.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): A form of talk therapy that helps you identify and then change unhelpful and unhealthy thought and behavior patterns. Online CBT can be done and covered with insurance by Talkspace.
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT): A type of talk therapy that focuses on intense emotions; commonly used for personality disorder treatment, such as borderline personality disorder treatment. If you’re interested in this type of therapy, you can get online DBT covered by Optum through Talkspace.

Does Optum cover online therapy?

Optum may cover mental health treatment delivered online through Talkspace. This includes convenient live sessions conducted over video, and audio calls with a therapist. Virtual therapy has been shown to be as effective as face-to-fact therapy for treating common mental health symptoms and conditions.

Does Optum cover psychiatry?

Optum may cover psychiatry, including virtual psychiatry through Talkspace. Talkspace will bill your Optum plan for your sessions with a Talkspace psychiatrist or psychiatric provider. If you are prescribed mental health medication, Optum will likely cover the cost of that as well after a copay. You’ll pick up your medication from your local pharmacy and they will be able to tell you the final cost.

Note: Talkspace providers do not prescribe controlled substances including sedatives and stimulants.
