How much does acamprosate cost?

The average cost of acamprosate is around $25 - $30 per month. However, it can vary widely based on several factors, like dosage, brand name vs. generic medication, your insurance coverage, and the pharmacy you use.

How do you take acamprosate?

Acamprosate is typically taken orally in the form of a tablet, with varying dosages depending on your prescription. It's important to take acamprosate exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, with or without food. Make sure to swallow the tablets whole and not crush or chew them. Be consistent with your dosage and follow your doctor's guidance for the best results in maintaining sobriety.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s close to the time you’d take your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume with your next scheduled one — do not take two doses of acamprosate at one time.

Why is there a shortage of acamprosate?

Acamprosate is currently experiencing a shortage in 2025 due to manufacturing disruptions. Both Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Mylan, key producers of the medication, have encountered production issues leading to limited availability. This shortage has been ongoing since at least September 2024.
